To meet the basic qualification to teach as a Qualified teacher in NZ, requires a NZ Teacher registration issued by the NZ Teachers Council for either an ECE or Primary Trained Teachers.

(Secondary school trained teachers effectively do not count as registered teachers for ECE.)

For NZ trained applicants, including overseas students who completed their teacher training or degree in NZ:

  • The Teachers Council requires transcripts and evidence of successful completion of a recognised New Zealand teaching degree

  • The Teaching Council also completes a Police check of the applicant as part of their process

Overseas trained applicants:

  • If you are relying on an overseas teaching degree you have to have FIRST applied to and had your overseas qualification approved by the NZQA Qualifications authority to Level 7 - i.e. a University degree level.

  • You then apply to the Teachers Council with your NZQA assessment

  • If you already have a visa to work in NZ you can then apply for jobs as a registered/certified teacher

If applying from overseas:

  • You need to follow all the above steps +

  • You need to pass an English competency test

  • You also have to have a "job offer" from an NZ accredited employer - (we are accredited employers)

  • Medical examination

  • Overseas police check

  • When you have the NZ Teacher registration and job offer you can apply for a working visa to NZ Immigration
